Tervuren, Belgium — The town of Tervuren is gearing up for a month filled with colour, creativity and community spirit this May, as a varied cultural programme invites residents to discover art, cinema, and green initiatives.
One of the most original ideas this spring comes from the public library of Tervuren, which transforms into a Groenbib for the entire month. The plant cutting exchange, ‘Ruil je stekje(s)’, encourages people with green fingers — or those hoping to grow some — to bring small plant cuttings and swap them for new ones.
The second floor of the library has been fitted with glass jars, wrapping materials and a book tower filled with handy gardening tips. The simple exchange system is easy: bring one cutting, take one home. It’s free, open to anyone over 18 and a creative way to share green enthusiasm in the community.
The town’s Marktplein will bloom early in the month when the annual Bloemenmarkt takes over on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May. From 9:00 to 16:00 each day, the market offers a wide selection of plants, herbs, summer flowers, ornamental trees and garden furniture. Plant lovers and hobby gardeners can browse stalls and pick up everything from balcony blooms to sturdy teak garden benches. Entry is free and the event is suitable for all ages.
Film enthusiasts are in for a treat on 20 May with the screening of ‘Banel & Adama’, a tender love story from Senegal. The film, spoken in Pular and French with Dutch subtitles, follows two young lovers whose decision to live together defies village tradition, straining family ties against a backdrop of drought and cultural expectation. Nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the film offers a striking portrayal of youth, love and climate crisis. The screening takes place at CC De Warandepoort from 20:00 to 21:30 and is free of charge.
To round off the month, art takes centre stage with the return of the Artiestentoer. From 24 May to 1 June, local artists open their studios and exhibit their work in shops and public spaces across Tervuren. A central exhibition at De Warandepoort offers a preview of participating artists’ work. From 29 May to 1 June, visitors can tour studios daily from 11:00 to 18:00, with a nocturne evening on 30 May from 18:00 to 22:00. All exhibitions and visits are free.
