The Fietsbieb has been going strong for almost five years, with many Tervurenaars keen to donate their children’s outgrown bikes to support the initiative. The next Fietsbieb opening takes place on Saturday 17 May, from 10:00 to 12:00.
Tervuren’s child bike library first opened its doors during the Covid-19 pandemic in October 2020. The concept remains refreshingly simple: for just €20 a year, families can borrow a carefully checked, second-hand children’s bike. As their children grow, the bikes can be exchanged for larger ones.
There’s no online reservation system or mobile app — aside from an online catalogue — with parents invited to visit in person once a month on a Saturday morning to choose a bike. Free tricycles and child seats are also available for families who need them.

The remaining 2025 dates for Tervuren’s volunteer-run children’s bike library are: 21 June, 23 August, 20 September, 18 October (marking the library’s fifth anniversary), 15 November and 20 December.
Run by dedicated volunteers and backed by Tervuren council, the Fietsbieb operates from a shed at the School van de Tervurendreef, next to the town’s Speelbieb, a toy lending library.
Open on Wednesday afternoons from 14:00 to 16:00 and Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00, the Speelbieb lends out everything from puzzles and board games to outdoor toys and baby equipment. It provides an affordable, sustainable way for local children up to 12 years old to discover new playthings without families having to constantly buy new.
